“Show me my new kingdom, my love. Now.” Aliel added to shake Chord from his stupor. Phasel’s body was still at the end of his sword, dangling, and he couldn’t believe how lightweight it felt. Like it had been nothing but a doll all along. He let the body fall to the ground with the sword still impaling it and, teeming with fear, love, dread, and adoration, took the arm of his goddess and led her away from the ashes of her rebirth and into the sunlit streets of her dying kingdom.

“You brought me back for this? These are ruins! This is a city of death, not a city of light!” Aliel pointed at the cracked buildings and the ruined fields and the empty streets, contempt blazing in her white eyes. In its eternal darkness, Noevum was humid and cool. The white clay bricks the Noevans used for building were crumbling now as the new sun looming so close overhead baked them dry.

“My dearest, this is just the beginning. You can help us heal it, and think of how marvelous it could be!” Chord pleaded.

“I can create a kingdom anywhere in the universes that I want. Why would I start with this wreck?”

“Because your believers are here already! Some of them may be hiding right now, but only out of fear of their unworthiness to gaze upon you. Once they’ve seen your power, your grace, your mercy,” he added somewhat hopefully, “they’ll fill the streets with gifts and sacrifices for you! Help me, my lady. Help me rebuild and we can keep you as strong as you want to be forever.”

Her contempt not yet relenting, he went on hurriedly. “My goddess, my queen, I brought you a kingdom where the sun never sets. What better place for a sun goddess? A kingdom of never ending day! This place, more than anywhere else in the universes, is surely where you belong.”

She turned her face upward to the tremendous orb of the sun that had only just reached its peak in the sky. Her white eyes for a moment turned golden as they absorbed the full sheen before she turned back to Chord and the former city of night.

“This still won’t do for my kingdom. Not like this, anyway,” she said, a smile twisting her delicate lips. She set out over the cracking pavement and the stone underneath each place she set her feet grew solid, the gray remnants of the dusty paths melting into a gleaming white marble. Chord watched in wonder as the clay exterior fell away from each building she passed and was replaced by the same rare marble lined with golden quartz that adorned his own mansion. As the buildings were transformed, lush green vines snaked along the stone and clung to the walls. Flowers with tremendous blooms, the likes of which had never been seen on Noevum, sprang into existence in small plots where families had previously cultivated their own mushroom gardens. Fruit, ripe and juicy, drooped heavily from vines that sprouted before his eyes.
